Mother’s Day Without Kids

It’s almost Mother’s Day, a day for hand-made cards and brunch with the family. If you’re like me, what you’d really like after that brunch is a little time without those sweet, sticky, oh-so-lovely little beings that make you a mother. So get a sitter or grab a girlfriend and take some time for yourself. You deserve it!

Day Out at the Not-Children’s Museum

Spend the day immersed in something that interests you and visit a museum. Check out the Dogs: Faithful and True exhibit at the Eiteljorg Museum or visit the Indiana State Museum to learn about natural disasters in the Nature Unleashed exhibit. Enjoy a quiet brunch at the museum cafe or see documentary (or a blockbuster) at the State Museum IMAX.

Go to the Theater

Take some time to catch an adult show. Have a cocktail and watch a movie at Keystone Art Cinema, Flix Brewhouse in Carmel, or Studio Movie Grill. If live theater is what you’re craving go see the IRT’s performance of Alfred Hitchcock’s suspense classic ‘Dial M for Murder’. Meeting up with the family for dinner afterwards? Check out our list of family-friendly places to have a romantic meal.

Take Yourself Shopping

This seems like an obvious one, but here’s the challenge: Don’t shop for kids’ clothes, don’t shop for groceries. Just go, by yourself, and browse the shops! If the weather is nice I like Clay Terrace. Grab a Starbucks, try on a new dress or some shoes, enjoy lunch at Biaggi’s or Petite Chou, and maybe even get a mani/pedi at Glace Nail Salon. For other locations try Edinburgh Premium Outlets or Hamilton Town Center.

Treat Yourself

Gourmet dessert shops seems to be popping up all around the area. If you’re like me you want to try them but don’t want to buy expensive pastries for your little ones to mash into their pants! Or maybe you’re the only one in the family who needs the sugar-rush. Take yourself out to try one of these places without the kids in tow. The Cake Bake Shop is an upscale lunch and treat spot which even offers a formal high tea. A bit more casual, SoBro’s The Gallery Pastry Shop offers delicious pastries, a hot-chocolate bar, and a nice selection of wines, beers, and champagne. If ice cream soothes your sweet tooth take a walk on the Monon and stop in for a shake or banana split at Bub’s Burgers and Ice Cream.

Need the Whole Night?

If Grandma can keep the little ones all night plan a mini-staycation at a local B&B or boutique hotel. NestleInn is a six bedroom bed and breakfast downtown that is “not your grandma’s B&B”. Hotel Broad Ripple is a boutique hotel right on the Monon in the heart of Broad Ripple with tasteful decor and restaurants and shops just a short walk from the door. If you like old homes stay at the Old Towne Carmel Bed and Breakfast, a tranquil and luxurious B&B with three guest rooms. If you’re looking for downtown with all of the big hotel amenities with luxury, check out the JW Marriott. Wherever you sleep, make sure you sleep in!
