If fishing is on your list this summer check out these spots. Remember that anyone 18 or older needs a license to fish except on 2016’s four free fishing days: April 16, May 21, and June 4-5.
Eagle Creek Park and Reservoir and Lilly Lake (7840 W. 56th Street, Indianapolis) offer a scenic location for fishing. You can fish from the shore, bring a boat, or rent one (make sure to check boat requirements before arriving). WIth 1300 acres of water you can catch walleye, catfish, largemouth bass, and sometimes hybrid striped bass. On Saturday, June 4th the Eagle Creek Foundation hosts a free Kids Fishing Derby. Kids 4-14 can fish for free and will receive a goody bag, free bait, and a cookout lunch. Pre-registration is required | link |
Riverside Lake in Riverside Park (2440 Riverside Dr. Indianapolis) allows fishing from dawn to dusk. It’s a nice place for young ones to learn, and fishermen and women can catch large and smallmouth bass, catfish, and crappie.
Ft. Harrison State Park (6000 N. Post Road) offers free fishing in Delaware lake from 7 a.m. to dusk. From the fishing pier you might be able to catch channel catfish, bluegill, redear sunfish, largemouth bass, longear, green sunfish, and rainbow trout.
Washington Township Park (115 S. County Road 575 East, Avon) allows bank fishing in pond #2. Cannel, catfish, bluegill, largemouth bass, gizzard shad, green sunfish, and common carp are some possible catches. Check before visiting as fishing times vary.
Families can fish off the pier at the pond in Meadowlark Park (450 Meadow Lane, Carmel) from dawn to dusk year round. You might find channel catfish, bluegill, redear sunfish, and largemouth bass.
On May 19th and May 26th Department of Natural Resources hosts several Family Fishing Workshops. Following the session, children age 6 and up (with an adult) who attend the workshop can borrow equipment and test their skills. | link |
